Shelly Marlott
My work is driven by curiosity, exploration, and a deep appreciation for the stories that shape our world. Having studied art history in college, I am drawn to the histories of people, places, and events, and to the ways these stories can be reimagined through art.
I work across a variety of mediums, including assemblage, gouache, watercolor, acrylic, and clay. I have never felt the need to limit myself to a single medium, subject, or approach. One day I may be painting birds in acrylic, the next sculpting in clay, or sketching a scene inspired by a 1950s carnival for a future assemblage. Each idea calls for its own form of expression, and I enjoy allowing the subject matter to guide the process.
Nature is a recurring presence throughout my work, whether it appears as a central subject or as a subtle reference woven into a composition. Color and texture are equally important to me, bringing depth, character, and a sense of discovery to each piece.
For me, making art is an ongoing process of discovery. Each piece offers an opportunity to experiment, learn, and follow an idea wherever it leads. My work reflects this openness—a continually changing collection of subjects, materials, and interpretations connected by curiosity, imagination, and a lasting fascination with the world around me.
